Why Pack Light?
Checking a bag costs $30–$60 each way on most airlines, takes 20+ minutes at baggage claim, and creates the risk of lost luggage. Packing everything into a carry-on for a 7-day trip is completely achievable — and once you do it once, you'll never go back.
The Clothing Formula
The biggest mistake people make: packing one outfit per day. Instead, use this formula:
- Tops: 4–5 (mix of casual and slightly nicer)
- Bottoms: 2–3 (pants, jeans, or shorts that can be re-worn)
- Underwear: 5–7 (or use quick-dry and wash mid-trip)
- Socks: 4–5 pairs
- Shoes: 2 max (wear the bulkiest pair on the plane)
- Jacket/layer: 1 (wear on the plane)
This covers 7 days with room to re-wear bottoms (totally normal) and spot-wash if needed. For warm destinations, swap jeans for linen pants or shorts — they pack much smaller.
The "Wear the Heavy Stuff" Rule
Anything bulky or heavy should be on your body on travel days, not in your bag. This includes:
- Your heaviest shoes / boots
- Your thickest jacket or coat
- Jeans (heaviest bottom option)
- Chunky sweater or hoodie
Wearing these items can free up 3–5kg and significant volume in your bag without sacrificing what you bring.
Toiletries: Less Is More
Most hotels and Airbnbs provide shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. If you're staying in these, you only need to pack:
- Toothbrush + toothpaste (travel size)
- Deodorant (solid stick — no liquid rules)
- Razor
- Any personal medications
- Face moisturizer / sunscreen if you use it daily
Everything else — shampoo, body wash, conditioner — buy a small travel-size bottle or grab it at your destination. A $3 mini bottle is worth not hauling liquids through security.
Electronics: Only What You'll Actually Use
Be ruthless with tech. For a 7-day trip, most people only need:
- Phone + charger
- Power bank (10,000 mAh is plenty)
- Earphones / headphones
- Laptop or tablet (only if actually needed)
- Universal adapter if international
Skip the extra camera if your phone is good enough. Leave the laptop if you genuinely won't work. Electronics are one of the biggest sources of unnecessary weight.
Packing Strategy: Cubes + Roll
Two techniques that maximize carry-on space:
- Packing cubes — compress clothing and keep categories organized. Use one cube per category (tops, bottoms, underwear/socks).
- Roll, don't fold — rolling clothes reduces wrinkles and fits more into tight spaces. Works especially well for t-shirts, jeans, and casual clothes.
What to Leave Behind
The fastest way to pack lighter is to stop bringing things you don't actually use. Common culprits:
- "Just in case" outfits for events that probably won't happen
- Full-size toiletry bottles
- Books (use a Kindle or phone app)
- Redundant electronics (two pairs of headphones, backup cables for cables you already have)
- A second pair of shoes "just in case"
- Excessive jewelry or accessories
